Karlan Judd

Karlan is currently developing his musical Lemonade, which has already received two readings in Los Angeles. His other musicals include The Case of the B-Team Cheerleader, which received an eight-week production at the Stella Adler Theatre in Hollywood, to critical aclaim; Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington, a mini-musical produced at the Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica; Pioneers All; The Age of His Enlightenment; and The Case of the Silver Lines.

He has been awarded several commissions, including Peacemaker, a 40-minute musical work for First Friends Quaker Church; "We, in Memory of Matthew Shepard, Brandon Teena, and James Byrd," for the UCLA Chamber Singers; and "Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind," for the University of La Verne Theatre Department. Karlan as received numerous awards, including the Elaine Krown Klein Fine Arts Award for his artistic achievements in composition, and the Moremen Conducting Scholarship.

He recently completed orchestration and consulting work for Manzanar; An American Story, which received its world premiere at Royce Hall (Los Angeles), conducted by Kent Nagano. Other current projects include Side View, or Diary of a Fat Gay Man, and Ohio, a musical dealing with the parallels between the Iraq War and the Kent State shootings in 1970. He has performed with notables Susan Egan, Sarah Brightman, and Rosemary Clooney. Performances include King Herold/Jesus Christ Superstar, Melvin P. Thorpe/The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and Lamar/Godspell.

Karlan received a Master of Music degree in conducting and a Bachelor of Arts degree in music composition from UCLA, studying with musical theatre veteran John Hall and renowned conductor Donald Neuen. Other projects include Dead Man Walking (opera by Jake Heggie and Terrence McNally), The End of the Affair (opera by Jake Heggie), and many other concert and film music projects. He is a member of the Academy for New Music Theatre (Los Angeles).
